People all over the world are becoming very reliant on social media, such as Twitter, to keep up to date with the latest news and their friends. It was yesterday when Bronco software developer James Slater uncovered a dangerous security flaw on Twitter and wrote about it on David Naylor's Blog.

The story picked up a great deal of traction within the search and web community and late last night Twitter released a statement to say that the issue had been resolved. But to our surprise the problem had not been fixed and today Twitter is still running with a big security issue that threatens user's login details and computer security.

James has explained today in more detail the security issue, and there is still a test running that shows that the problem hasn't been resolved properly. The main issue is that Twitter allows for potentially dangerous code to be embedded into a tweet which if you're logged in you will be in danger, basically the site was allowing cross site scripting.

Problems like this need to be sorted out by the social media sites to ensure that user's details are secure, and as users of these sites we need to be very conscious about the type of data we are freely giving to anyone on the internet. It has been suggested that you should only follow people on Twitter that you know and trust, and use a Twitter application to read and send tweets such as Tweetdeck, Twitterfox or Hootsuite. Hopefully Twitter will rectify this problem today and have a serious look at their site security.
