For some businesses, that&#8217;s enough. But if you want complete control, long-term flexibility and a site that really meets all your requirements, a custom built site is still worth the investment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lets take a look at some of the areas that a custom website might just excel vs an off-the-shelf platform. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>You\u2019re Not Tied to a Platform\u2019s Rules &amp; Limitations<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Out-of-the-box platforms are convenient \u2014 until they\u2019re not. Some of the limitations we&#8217;ve experienced when using a platform are things like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Integrating a specific third-party tool that doesn&#8217;t have a &#8216;plugin&#8217;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Changing the URL structure to be more user or SEO-friendly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Changing the checkout flow <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Customising product fields for more complex products<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Optimising core web vitals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Adding custom layouts for niche products<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have a basic eCommerce store, you might not need to do any of those things. But as soon as business complexity increases, you might run into blockers with some of the above. With a custom build, you choose your hosting, security protocols, backups and performance tuning. One example that springs to mind is a Shopify site that required several plugins, all of which had their own monthly fees. Whilst the cost of getting a really basic site up and running was low, once it was customised with plugins and behaved as the business wanted, there were large recurring monthly fees that were completely unavoidable without losing functionality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A custom site on the other hand would have cost more up front, but wouldn&#8217;t have had all of the ongoing charges. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re considering both options, it&#8217;s a really useful exercise to put all costs for both into a spreadsheet and calculate whether a custom site actually becomes &#8216;cheaper&#8217; at some point than an off-the-shelf platform.
