Paul Roffman is a magician, mind-reader, actor, and voice-over artist who required a website that reflected his unique blend of skills. His audience ranges from corporate professionals to private event organisers, necessitating a design that balanced creativity with usability. Paul’s old website, outdated and far from today’s best practices, struggled to represent his brand effectively. With no prior redesign success, Paul turned to Bronco to create a compelling digital presence.

Bronco approached the redesign of Paul Roffman’s digital presence with a strategy that merged creative flair and practical functionality. The aim was to create a platform that reflected Paul’s unique blend of talents while providing an intuitive and engaging experience for his audience. By combining innovative design elements, tailored content, and advanced performance techniques, the solution was crafted to meet Paul’s diverse objectives.

Crafting a sophisticated identity

Designing Paul’s logo required careful consideration to avoid clichéd magician imagery. After several iterations, Bronco delivered a James Bond-inspired logo that embodies sophistication and versatility, suitable for Paul’s roles as an actor, voice-over artist, and magician. The logo became a foundational element of the website’s design, aligning seamlessly with the overall aesthetic.

Visual design with creative flourishes

The website’s design prioritised striking visuals without compromising functionality. Double exposure imagery, combined with Art Deco-inspired elements, added depth and elegance to the design. By blending these creative touches with Paul’s professional photography, the site achieved a visually rich experience while maintaining a dark, sophisticated colour palette that enhances usability.

Content creation with a personal touch

Rather than merely editing existing content, Bronco collaborated with Paul to author much of the website’s text. This approach ensured the content was tailored to his unique brand while communicating his offerings effectively. The design and writing processes were intertwined, enabling the creation of a cohesive user experience that reflected Paul’s personality and goals.

Performance optimisation

To handle the site’s complex visuals and numerous high-quality images, Bronco employed advanced performance techniques. Image optimisation and responsive imagery were used to reduce load times, while lazy loading initially displayed lightweight blurred placeholders until users scrolled to view the full images. Ensuring the mobile version of the site was lighter than the desktop version further enhanced the experience for users on slower connections. These measures resulted in an optimised website with an initial homepage load of approximately 1.21MB, close to Bronco’s 1MB target.
