Drag-and-drop website builders are absolutely everywhere now – even advertised on TV. Whether it’s Wix, Squarespace, Shopify, they all promise a slick design and fast setup, with no coding required to get your online business off the ground. For some businesses, that’s enough. But if you want complete control, long-term flexibility and a site that really meets all your requirements, a custom built site is still worth the investment.
Lets take a look at some of the areas that a custom website might just excel vs an off-the-shelf platform.
Out-of-the-box platforms are convenient — until they’re not. Some of the limitations we’ve experienced when using a platform are things like:
If you have a basic eCommerce store, you might not need to do any of those things. But as soon as business complexity increases, you might run into blockers with some of the above. With a custom build, you can design the site architecture, layout and user journeys for your specific products and customers, not shoehorn them into an existing flow.
We talk a lot about how much page speed matters, not just for SEO but for the user experience (especially on mobile). Off-the-shelf platforms are often bloated with code that you just don’t need; that’s just an outcome of being a ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution. A custom site, built from the ground up, will only include what’s actually needed. Often, that means you can really optimise the load times.
Platforms like Shopify or Wix are great for new businesses, but what happens when you scale? Often, there’s an entry-level version and then you have to add on a more expensive subscription if you want to launch into new markets or add on new features. And you might run into the issues of ‘what’s possible’ we mentioned above. With a custom site, it can grow with you and often offers more flexibility in terms of adding new features or new logic without being constrained.
As an SEO agency, we can’t not mention SEO. All off-the-shelf platforms claim to be SEO-friendly, but you’re generally locked into default templates or URL structures. You can’t always control things like:
Once again, a bespoke build gives your SEO team full control. No more “the platform doesn’t allow that” excuses.

Template sites, no matter how nicely designed, can feel generic. If you’ve looked at enough sites, you start to be able to tell whether they’re on Shopify, Magento etc. A custom-built site lets your brand stand out, not just visually, but in how it behaves. Whilst there are definitely best practices when it comes to the web, there are also times when you might want to create a really interesting experience, and this is where a custom build can come into its own.
On a hosted platform, your data sits on their servers. With a custom build, you choose your hosting, security protocols, backups and performance tuning. You’re not vulnerable to policy changes, pricing hikes or outages beyond your control.
Drag-and-drop builders often start cheap, but costs can spiral quite quickly. One example that springs to mind is a Shopify site that required several plugins, all of which had their own monthly fees. Whilst the cost of getting a really basic site up and running was low, once it was customised with plugins and behaved as the business wanted, there were large recurring monthly fees that were completely unavoidable without losing functionality.
A custom site on the other hand would have cost more up front, but wouldn’t have had all of the ongoing charges.
If you’re considering both options, it’s a really useful exercise to put all costs for both into a spreadsheet and calculate whether a custom site actually becomes ‘cheaper’ at some point than an off-the-shelf platform. In the case above, the Shopify build became more expensive than the custom site after about 14 months of recurring charges.
