How to Get More Social Visibility and Engagement Using Semrush

If you’re only using Semrush for SEO, you’re missing a key opportunity to boost your visibility across search and social media strategy. With the right social media tools, you’ll know exactly what’s working, what’s trending, and where you can outshine your competitors.

Here are four ways that social media managers can use Semrush to turn your social media content into a high-performing asset.

1. See if Your Social Media Posts are Ranking on Google

Your social posts can show up in Google search results, and Semrush can help you find them. This is especially important to understand as posts on social media platforms such as Instagram are now indexable in Google and are appearing in Google searches.

Since you can’t use Google Search Console for a social media domain, you’ll use a different part of the Semrush social toolkit.

On the left hand side, head to SEO, then Organic Research. Select your country in the dropdown. Simply paste the website URL of a social profile (like your TikTok or LinkedIn) into the tool.

When you want to look at the performance of individual posts, set the search option to ‘Exact URL’. If you’d rather review the full activity of a TikTok profile for example, then switch the search bar to ‘Subfolder’, which pulls in historical data from every post on that profile.

Once you’ve chosen the right option, you’ll see a social dashboard of detailed information on how that profile or post appears in Google search. The key area to pay attention to is the ‘Top Keywords’ section, where you can track key metrics like rankings and overall performance.

2. Uncover Your Competitors’ Content

Stop guessing what your competitors’ social media accounts are doing and let Semrush show you.

Click “Social” on the left hand side panel and then “Social Media Tracker”. This social tracker gives you an inside look at what’s working for your rivals. To get started, set up a project and add your competitors’ social profiles.

Then, check the “Top Content” report to see their top-performing content including posts with the most engagement, shares, and comments. These engagement metrics reveal what types of content and types of posts, from video content to images or links, are most effective with your shared audience, and you can use these valuable insights to shape your content calendar, improve your social media campaigns, and even adjust your tone of voice.

3. Find Trending Topics and Content Ideas

Never run out of content ideas for your social media channels again. Semrush helps you find out what your target audience is actively searching for using two social media marketing tools: Topic Research and the Keyword Magic Tool. 

Use Topic Research to get a mind map of related ideas, popular headlines, and common questions around an industry topic – perfect for discovering the latest trends.

For a more direct approach, use the Keyword Magic Tool and filter for “Questions” to see the exact questions people are typing into Google. These questions and topics are perfect for creating informative social networks posts, video content, or polls that speak directly to your audience’s interests. They can also support content marketing campaigns and boost brand awareness.

4. Optimise Your Social Media Profiles for SEO

Use Semrush to make your social media presence more discoverable on Google. Using the Keyword Overview tool, search for high-volume keywords relevant to your business. Then, use these keywords strategically in your social media bios, business pages, profile descriptions, and posts. This simple step can help your social platforms appear in search results when people are looking for a business like yours or a Google Business Profile, giving you an extra boost in organic visibility as well as brand reputation.
