The Benefits of Having an Employee of the Month

Employee of the month schemes have been around for decades, and there’s a reason why. Not only does having one motivate employees to do their best work, but it also provides businesses with a number of benefits. Having an employee of the month scheme is a great way to show your staff that you appreciate their hard work and dedication. 

Here at Bronco our employee of the month is selected by having a vote, all of the team cast their votes at the end of the month for who they think should win and give their reasons why. The winner is then revealed during our team huddle and the reasons given. We also announce who the runners-up were and their reasons why. Hearing the reasons why you’ve won the vote are always well appreciated and it’s great to have a little boost when you hear how awesome you are! The winner also gets the employee of the month trophy for the duration of the month and at the end of the year all votes are consolidated and we announce an employee of the year who wins a generous prize!

We also have a separate Slack channel called #cheersforpeers, we use this regularly to give our colleagues a shout out to thank them individually when they help us out or have gone above and beyond! This also helps people when making their employee of the month vote if they’re not too sure who to give theirs to or why. More often than not the votes are very close! Some people decide 2 people, or sometimes more, have performed exceptionally well some months and therefore we get half and third votes added to the mix!

2021: Matt  – Matt only won the month twice in the year! 

2020: Sian  – Sian never won a month, just consistently good!

Here’s a look at some of the reasons why having an employee of the month is beneficial for both staff and businesses.

Let’s face it, most people enjoy being recognised for a job well done. So knowing that your colleagues have voted for you as an employee of the month, does just that. This can help boost morale among staff as they strive to be the one who is chosen next. A boost in morale is always good to have amongst a team and it’s also nice to have hard work recognised.

Another benefit of having an employee of the month is that every month there is a feeling of celebration and recognition for staff’s hard work. This adds to a positive work environment and culture of respect, gratitude and appreciation for all staff.

3. Helps improve productivity

Finally, having an employee of the month scheme can help to boost productivity amongst staff. A little bit of healthy competition amongst colleagues to win the title every month can give everyone’s productivity a little boost!
